Systems Research and Development Service.; Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Group.]. Jet noise is produced by a high-velocity jet exhausted from the core of the engine and a fan noise is the result of the pressure disturbance that must be resolved at the trailing edge of the blade.
Engine noise sources include the jet and fan. Other engine noise sources, such as the compressors, turbines, and combustor do not contribute. The JT8D turbofan engine, widely used in short and medium range transport aircraft, contributes substantially to airport community noise.
The jet noise is predominant in the JT8D engine and may be reduced in a modified engine, without loss of thrust. In fact, Pratt and Whitney Company is working on a geared turbofan jet engine that they believe will reduce fuel burn, produce lesser noise and emit less toxics while General Electric is coming up with simpler “ecore” jet engines that will be more fuel efficient than the current jet engines with as much as almost two fifths of current jet.
